Three-cornered "thrown" armchair featuring an an asymmetrical three-legged frame, a form which developed prominently throughout sixteenth and seventeenth-century England, New England, and Holland. Woodworkers specializing in this trade were termed turners or bodgers, creating complex lattices and beadings from regional hardwoods. Though positioned within the legacy of the Age of Oak style, the lathed joinery techniques developed for these items directly preceded and informed the functional designs of subsequent Shaker furniture.
This design is a direct descendant of an earlier chair, referred to as the Holyoke Chair or, sometimes, the Bizarre Chair, which was reserved for the president of Harvard University at ceremonies from at least 1770.
