Description
Saint-Philémon, Québec. C. 1965. Painted wood. Philippe Roy carvings are exceptionally scarce, with relatively few documented examples appearing publicly or at auction. His work occupies a distinctive place within the tradition of Quebec folk sculpture. Though clearly inspired by a zebra, Roy interprets the animal through the lens of folk art invention, incorporating horse like features as well. The finely carved mane and the subtly expressive face, with its small ears, dark eyes, and delicately painted red mouth give the animal an unexpectedly gentle personality. Unmarked. 9.25" 12" x 3".
