Mario Jaime Torroella (born March 30, 1935, in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban American visual artist and architect based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He earned his B.A. from Dartmouth College (1957) and a Master's in Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design (1962). He was the Co-founder of HMFH Architects in 1969, where he served as principal and director of design until retiring in 2016.
Torroella received the CINTAS Fellowship and was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Torroella is largely self-taught as an artist, first guided by his mother in watercolor and oil techniques and later evolving into a distinctive Expressionist style. His artwork is known for vivid, saturated colors, primal forms, and deep symbolic content, covering themes such as alienation, beauty, violence, mysticism, death, and cultural exile.
Torroella's first solo exhibition was in 1962 at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. Since then, his solo and group exhibitions have spanned the U.S., Puerto Rico, France, Switzerland, Spain, and beyond. Torroella's works are in institutional collections like the University of Puerto Rico and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Malaga, Spain.
