Begun a year earlier, Georges Mathieu completed in 1967 the production of a series of posters for Air France, the initiative of which went to Pierre Sautet, Air France's Deputy Commercial Director. This unique encounter between art and advertising led to the presentation of the posters on October 26, 1967 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. They were a huge success: there were dozens of exhibitions organized in France and then around the world, and more than a million posters sold. After studying literature, law and philosophy at the University of Lille, Georges Mathieu, born in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) on January 27, 1921, began painting in 1942. He died on June 10, 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt. His work is currently present in at least seventy-nine museums and public collections.
