Fantastic hunt scene with pack of dogs by Arthur Alfred Davis, "Full Cry"
original Oil on canvas, signed & dated bottom right, with inscription plaque bottom stretcher.
canvas: 36" X 24"
With frame:
46" X 33
Born 1859 in Colchester, Essex. His parents were Frederick Davis, a landscape artist from Dover (b.1823 fl.1853-1892) and Sarah Davis. By 1871, the family had moved to the St Pancras area of London where his father earned his living as an artist. Although little is known of his early education, it is highly likely he would have been taught art by his father. He married to Eleanor Helen Holt in 1878 and together they lived at Weedington Road, St Pancras. They later moved to Enkel Street, Islington before settling in Watford around the turn of the century. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1881-1884 and at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street with titles including "˜Dust Cart – a London Street', and "˜Waiting for a Job'. Davis specialized in hunting and sporting scenes with dogs which were highly popular during the Victorian era. He was influenced by his contemporaries such as Thomas Blinks and George Derville Rowlandson. Davis's works are painted in loose free flowing style that captures the animation and movement of the dogs beautifully.
