Sukuma Male Figure

Description

Africa, Tanzania, Sukuma peoples, 20th century. Carved wood standing male figure, the elongated body with squared shoulders, narrow waist, and arms bent with hands resting at the hips. The head is rendered with a rounded cranium, projecting ears, deeply cut rectangular eyes, long angular nose, and squared mouth. The surface shows a dry, dark brown patina with areas of reddish oxidation, accretion, and wear throughout. The simplified geometric treatment of the torso and facial features is characteristic of figural sculpture from the Sukuma region.

Measurements: Size 33 1/2" L

Condition: Age-related wear, surface abrasions, scattered chips, and losses throughout. Prominent age crack running vertically through the front of the head, neck, and torso, continuing through areas of the figure. Additional cracking visible to the head, legs, and base of feet. Losses and erosion to both feet and extremities. Surface accretions, discoloration, and patina consistent with age and handling. Overall stable with expected wear.
