Description
East Africa, Kenya, probably Mijikenda / Giriama peoples, 20th century
Carved wooden commemorative post, or "Kigango", of elongated plank form with a stylized human head and long narrow body. The face is rendered with simplified features, including recessed brow area, long projecting nose, small ears, and a narrow incised mouth. The front of the post retains worn white pigment, with carved geometric panels and traces of red, blue, ochre, and dark pigment arranged across the torso-like body. The lower section is decorated with rows of rectangular and fan-like carved motifs, while the reverse remains largely uncarved, showing heavy weathering, vertical grain separation, and losses from age and exposure. The form and surface are consistent with commemorative posts associated with the Mijikenda peoples of coastal Kenya, particularly the Giriama, though attribution should remain cautious.Condition: Weathered surface throughout, pigment loss, age cracks, erosion, losses to the lower edge and side sections, old wood splitting and deterioration visible to the reverse.
Size: 52" H x 11 1/2" W
Family collection of an esteemed diplomat and ambassador amassed during travel and work circa 1960-1990s in the medical field providing charitable advanced medical care throughout the African continent and internationally.
