Lambak Figural Chalkline

Description

Indonesia, Sumatra or Borneo region, Lambak or related people, carved wood chalkline or marking tool, the container formed as a rounded vessel raised on small feet, with a hinged figural cover depicting a stylized reclining human figure. The head is carved with deeply recessed eyes, projecting brow, and pronounced mouth, the body extending backward into a long arched handle form. A metal crank and spindle mechanism remains attached to the side, with traces of darkened patina and use wear throughout.
