Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya region, Southern Mexico or Guatemala, Classic Period, circa 600 - 900 CE. Stucco architectural fragment modeled as the head of a deity, the face with prominent spiral eyes, broad nose, and projecting mouth, retaining traces of red pigment over a pale stucco surface. The features may suggest an association with Chaac, the Maya rain deity, who was closely connected with rain, agricultural fertility, and the sustaining of crops. Mounted on a custom black display stand.
