Description
39 in longA United States Army Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) sword manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company. The sword features a cast brass hilt with a single knuckle bow, a double kidney-shaped shell guard, and a globular pommel with an intact capstan nut. The brass grip is cast with a horizontal ribbed pattern to simulate wire wrapping. The blade is straight and single-edged with a single fuller that runs approximately two-thirds of the length. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the maker's mark N.P. AMES, CABOTVILLE, and the date 1845 in three lines. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the ordnance marks US and N W P.
