During this era of frontier service, the War Department shifted from the oversized stamped brass horn insignia of the Civil War to more compact, refined embroidered bullion versions for dress uniforms, specifically for officers and chief musicians of the infantry and cavalry bands. This specific piece features the characteristic "looped" infantry bugle horn, but incorporates an ornate hanging chain and double tassels—a stylized embellishment frequently seen on private-purchase officer cap badges and prestigious regimental band uniforms of the late 19th century rather than standard issue enlisted gear. The piece is in good condition, showing a traditional period-correct cheesecloth reverse and minimal oxidation to the gold wire; however, there is a structural wire break on the cord leading down to one of the tassels, though the tassel itself remains attached.
