Description
This fascinating assemblage features an array of prehistoric and early indigenous utilitarian objects, highlighted by a substantial stone mortar (metate) paired with a hand-held grinding stone (mano). The collection also includes a finely worked grooved axe head carved from dense dark igneous stone, a unique perforated discoidal or "nutting stone" with five distinct apertures, and four examples of flint or chert debitage showing clear signs of percussion flaking. These pieces represent essential domestic and hunting technologies from North American indigenous cultures, likely spanning the Archaic to Woodland periods. The items are in good "as-found" condition, displaying authentic earthen patinas, minor impact pitting on the pounding surfaces, and natural surface wear consistent with age and subterranean burial. Mortar: H 3", W 8", D 8"; Grinding Stone: H 1.75", W 4.75", D 4"; Grooved Axe: H 2.25", W 4.75", D 6.25"; Perforated Stone: H 1", W 3.5", D 3.25"; Chert/Flint Pieces: L 2.75" – 4". Please see photos for condition. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available Post-Auction.
