Description
This is an excellent example of an antique heavy-duty leather pack animal muzzle, likely designed for a donkey or mule in a working capacity. The robust construction and material—thick, dark brown, contoured leather—are characteristic of livestock gear used during the late 19th to early 20th century. The design features a large central mouth hole and numerous studded ventilation holes on the tapered front, intended to prevent the animal from biting or chewing without severely restricting breathing. The large eye/nose holes visible from the interior view also confirm this was designed for the face of a larger animal rather than a person. Multiple heavy-duty metal buckles and reinforced leather strapping are present for secure fitting. The piece shows considerable wear consistent with decades of field use: the leather is stiff, cracked, and heavily soiled, possessing a desirable, rich patina. Stitching and rivets appear intact but show evidence of rust and discoloration, and a modern paper tag is affixed to a buckle. The overall condition is good for its age and use, perfect for a collector of vintage Americana or equine/livestock gear. H 7", W 11", D 8". From the Western display in Donley's Wild West Town.
