1960 Papago Basket

Description

This Papago basket crafted around the 1960s exemplifies the traditional artistry of the Tohono O’odham (formerly known as Papago) people of the Sonoran Desert. The basket features a tightly coiled weave, hallmark of Papago basketry, using natural materials such as bare grass or cattail for the light-colored foundation, and devil's claw for the contrasting dark geometric designs. The design incorporates a classic step-pattern a common motif in Papago weaving. Although the basket is in good condition there is some discoloration from wear or handling visible. Dimensions: 6.5” diameter x 4.25” tall. Please see photos.
