Description
These striking Plains-style hide cuffs, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, were traditionally worn as wrist gauntlets or arm bands, though similar styles were occasionally utilized for ankles in ceremonial dance regalia. Constructed from brain-tanned leather and lined with vibrant red trade cloth, they feature intricate "lazy stitch" beadwork. The close-up images reveal a sophisticated palette of seed beads, including cobalt blue, greasy yellow, translucent green, and faceted metallic beads that add a subtle shimmer to the geometric motifs. The design is characteristic of Sioux or Cheyenne artistry from the Reservation period. While the leather remains relatively supple, the items show significant honest wear; there are areas of bead loss along the edges, several broken or missing leather ties, and some fraying to the interior red cloth lining. The hide shows darkened patination and minor stiffening consistent with age and use. H 9.5", W 3.75", D 3.75". Please see photos.
