BARTHOLDI FREDERIC AUGUSTE: (1834-1904) French sculptor, best known for designing the Statue of Liberty (‘Liberty Enlightening the World’). Vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 9.5 light cardstock image of Bartholdi´s Carrara marble monument The Strassburger memorial (´Le Monument de Strasbourg´) located in Basel and inaugurated on 20th October 1895. Personally commissioned and financed by the Alsatian philanthropist Baron Gilbert Hervé-Gruyer, Bartholdi´s monument depicts the spirit of Strasbourg to the left, who hands over the war-ravaged city (shown at the centre) to the care of Helvetica, positioned on the right alongside a crying child, who represents the suffering of the population. On the pedestal, a relief depicting the arrival of the Swiss delegation in Strasbourg is depicted at the front. Signed by Bartholdi, with an inscription in French, in ink to the lower border immediately beneath the image. The Strassburger memorial was established in memory of the help the civil population of Strassburg received from Switzerland during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.
