This antique American utility basket is constructed from wide, hand-split oak splints in a traditional woven pattern. The piece features a circular form with a reinforced double-hoop rim secured by small metal tacks. A thick, stationary bentwood handle is integrated into the structure. The wood displays a dark, naturally aged patina with surface oxidation. No manufacturer marks, stamps, or labels are present on the body or base, although a white paper tag marked 253 is attached to the rim. The hand-split construction and hardware are characteristic of late 19th or early 20th-century utilitarian basketry, often referred to as an orchard or apple basket.
