Description
This lot features two lidded boxes from the early 20th century. The larger rectangular box is constructed of a paper-covered substrate, likely cardboard or thin wood, decorated with gilded lithographed motifs of floral wreaths and wheat stalks. The lid bears a handwritten inscription in ink reading Bessie paper this for Virginias doll clothes. The second, smaller box is made of wood and is decorated using a pyrography or pokerwork technique with hand-painted red and green accents. The design depicts poinsettias and holly leaves on a stippled ground, with a burnt diagonal stripe pattern along the top edge of the base. The interior of the wooden box is unfinished, showing the reverse of the lid decoration. Both pieces are characteristic of early 20th-century domestic decorative arts.
