Description
A fine pair of late 19th century cast-iron garden armchairs by James W. Carr of Richmond, Virginia, in the desirable fern pattern. Each chair is cast in four sections, featuring an arched back transitioning to rolled arms above a scroll-pierced seat, raised on saber-like legs with the fern design repeated on the ends. One section is embossed "JAMES W. CARR, RICHMOND, VA" to the front edge of the seat. The James W. Carr foundry is noted for producing highly decorative garden furnishings, with this line referenced in a 1907 article in the Richmond Times Dispatch. Each chair measures approximately 30 in. H x 23 in. W x 18 in. D, with a floor to seat height of 16 in. In very good condition.
