Selections from The Black Museum (set of 4)
1990-1991
group of objects including a cassette tape, labeled, Daniel B. Tisdale Studios, a small clear box containing a bit of hair and a printed label, reading: "Authentic replica of afro hair #14', and a Xerox reproduction on a sheet 7-1/2 x 7 inches, picturing a hair pick.
These objects were part of the installation, The Black Museum, installed at the Randolph Street Gallery. The Black Museum presents the artist as curator /ethnographer who preserves African -American culture of the '60s as evidence for the future. While exploring the boundaries between art and artifacts, he also examines The Museum as an institution and repository of cultural images.
This project could be seen as a precursor to some of Rashid Johnson's similar work.
