Description
This is a mid-20th-century American pieced quilt top constructed from various cotton print and solid fabrics. The piece features a grid of string-pieced or strip-pieced blocks, each composed of diagonal fabric scraps. Notable textile patterns include 1930s-style novelty prints such as a black fabric with white button motifs, floral prints, and a blue and white striped fabric with a red dash or stitch-like pattern. The blocks are joined by cream-colored sashing made from repurposed utilitarian cotton feed or grain sacks. Several strips of the sashing retain original commercial printing from their prior use, with visible black letters including PER and DOH. Faint blue ink characters are also present on the sashing material. The piece is hand-pieced and represents a traditional example of North American folk quilting using recycled materials.
