Description
This vintage utility quilt or comforter features a hand-pieced and hand-tied construction. The front side is composed of an irregular, improvisational patchwork of rectangular blocks in various sizes. The fabrics appear to be heavyweight utilitarian textiles, including cotton or cotton-blend twills in shades of navy blue, olive drab, khaki, maroon, and dark brown. Rather than traditional quilting stitches, the three layers are secured with numerous tan yarn or fabric ties distributed across the surface. The reverse side consists of three large, vertically joined panels of dark navy and black fabric. A small area of dark zig-zag reinforcement or repair stitching is visible on the lower khaki-colored patch on the front. No manufacturer labels or maker marks are present.
