Description
(1835-1886) Union signal corps captain who, during the Confederate artillery bombardment immediately preceding Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, remained at his post at General Meade’s headquarters near Cemetery Hill after the rest of his unit had been driven away, taking with them their signaling equipment. Castle fashioned a makeshift signal flag out of a bedsheet and continued to report on Confederate movements, contributing to the Union repulse of the assault. Very scarce A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], May 3, 1864, to a Lt. Evans, a requisition for crackers, coffee and other foodstuffs. He signs ‘D. E. Castle’ in black ink at the conclusion. Shows period folds, with a pencil endorsement in another hand at bottom and pencil marks to the text, slightly ragged at the left edge where detached from another leaf, otherwise in very good overall condition.
