Description
(1837 - 1863) Union brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg, and at Gettysburg was responsible for the fortification of Little Round Top. Mortally wounded at Gettysburg as he cheered his men on. Very rare, war-date A.E.S. in black ink on a 3.25 x 2.5 in. slip of paper cut from a larger document, in full: ‘H. Q. 83 Penna. 3 Brig. 1st Div. 5 Corps C. G. D. January 26, [18]63 Respy for’d, approved for (48) forty eight hours.’ He signs boldly ‘Strong Vincent’ at the conclusion, adding ‘Col. 83 Penna.’, the rank he would hold during his gallant action and wounding at Gettysburg. Slightly ragged and toned at the edges, with faint archival tape marks to the verso, otherwise in very good condition overall. Strong was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General to date from July 3, 1863, but likely died before ever learning of the honor, in a field hospital on July 7. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Vincent, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
