(1823-1873) Confederate major general who commanded a brigade at Shiloh and under Polk, captured while defending Port Hudson. Scarce A.E.S. on a war-date partly-printed document, 1p. oblong 8vo., Fort Gaines, AL, Dec. 3, 1861, a receipt for clothing issued by notable politician Duff Green as agent of the State of Alabama, to Capt. Charle’s DeVoe’s company of the 21st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers. Capt. DeVoe signs acknowledging receipt of the articles, with Gardner adding his endorsement below: ‘Gen Green will please issue on communication orders By order of Brig Gen [Jones M.] Withers’. He signs ‘F Gardner’ in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Lt. Col. C. S. A.’ Slightly ragged at the top and left edges where detached from a larger sheet, with a horizontal fold at center, otherwise in very good to fine condition.
