Description
(1834-1902) Union brigade general who led his 43rd Ohio Volunteers with distinction at Iuka, Cornith and the Atlanta and Carolinas Campaigns, before being severely wounded and losing his right leg at the Battle of Rivers’ Bridge. War-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Prospect, TN, Dec. 31, 1863, a discharge certificate for a Sgt. Samuel Pickering of the 43rd Ohio, as he has reenlisted in the Veterans’ Volunteer Corps. Swayne signs boldly in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Colonel’. Heavily toned overall, with period folds and some chips to the edges, still in very good condition.
