Description
(1908-1973) Thirty-sixth President of the United States and creator of the 'Great Society' social welfare programs. America's growing involvement in Vietnam led to his declining a renomination as president. Fine association and content T.L.S. as President ‘Lyndon’ 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 3, 1965, on White House letterhead to Rep. EMANUEL CELLER, sending him a 1965 quarter. In part: ‘…I would like you to have this freshly minted quarter. It has just come from the Mint, the first result of your new coinage legislation. On August 24, 1935, President Roosevelt wrote of the 74th Congress, ‘It has dealt, in the spirit of statesmanship, with matters of vital interest to the lives of our people. Much has been accomplished for the permanent well-being of the Nation as a whole.’ I wanted you – as a member of an even more enlightened and public-minded 89th Congress – to have this shiny quarter as a memento…’. The Coinage Act of 1965 sought to address coin shortages which had begun in 1959 by reducing the silver content from dimes and quarters from 90 percent to just 40 percent. Following the ratification of the Act, the Mint began to strike the first of the 1965-dated coins on August 23 of that year, making them the first U.S. coins to bear that date. EMANUEL CELLER (1888-1981) was a Democratic politician from New York who served as representative of that state for 50 years. Handsomely matted in black with a 1965 quarter and a portrait, and set into a carved black frame measuring 19.5 x 15 in. Very good condition, not examined out of frame.
