BRITISH NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, wool on linen, four and one-half alphabet and numeral rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, lower half with biblical text from 3 John, verse 11 and the last row is signed "M Pownall Her work Aged 11 1826", below with a group of pictorial motifs including a butterfly, two crowns, and flowers, all encompassed by a flower or berry vine border. Housed under glass in a 20th century molded frame, backing paper with framer's label for The Wolverhampton Picture Framing Co. of Wolverhampton, England. Dated 1826. 10 5/8" x 12 1/4" sight, 12 1/4" x 13 7/8" OA.
Mostly in good visual condition with linen having some toning and stains, much of the thread retains bright colors with some typical fugitive color, scattered losses, frame with wear and surface scratches, bottom edges having losses to molding. Not examined out of frame.
