BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, cotton or other thread on linen, top section with motifs including florets, a dog or other animal, a basket of flowers, birds, and two fleur-de-lis flanking a crown, center signed "Mary Ann Powling / Aged 7 years / 1834" with two hearts below, bottom section featuring a stag within an arched foliate frame above a brick house / building with a bird and two cross motifs along the roof, all encompassed by a scrolling vine border with trefoil-arranged flowers. Housed under glass in a modern frame. Dated 1834. 7 5/8" x 16 7/8" sight, 8 5/8" x 17 7/8" OA.

Good to very good visual condition with linen having moderate toning and some stains, some thread with fading / fugitive color, a few minor breaks to thread, frame with wear and other imperfections. Not examined out of frame.
