BRITISH HYMN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, completed in fine stitches, center titled "AN HYMN" featuring three verses from a hymn by English pastor and hymnwriter Isaac Watts (1674-1748) within a foliate frame with motifs to top corners, all surrounded by pictorial motifs including flowers, baskets, birds, and trees, top center with "Glory / be to God / on high" within an octagonal cartouche, lower center signed "Dinah Williams Work done in / The Year 1800", all encompassed by a flower / berry vine border with a central basket along bottom edge. Housed under glass in a 20th century frame, backing paper with framer's label for Carter's of Lynchburg, VA. Dated 1800. 12" x 14" sight, 14" x 16 1/8" OA.
Thread in very good to excellent visual condition with some toning / stains and some typical fugitive color, linen in fair to good condition with light to heavy toning, scattered stains, and some small holes, frame with wear and surface scratches. Not examined out of frame.
