This M1 helmet is identified to Merton D. Levey, who served in Company B, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division during World War II. Levey’s last name is marked inside the liner, and 3rd Infantry Division insignia appear on both the helmet shell and liner. Although most of the paint has worn away, small surviving traces of blue and white remain visible, consistent with original hand-applied divisional markings | Muster rolls place Levey in Italy as of July 10, 1944, confirming overseas service with the 3rd Infantry Division during the Italian Campaign | Service records show that Levey was hospitalized in July 1944 at age 19 and diagnosed with mitral insufficiency, a condition determined to have existed prior to service. He was discharged from active duty in September 1944. Subsequent medical records document continued treatment for rheumatic cardiovascular disease, leading to final discharge for medical reasons in early 1945.*Sourced from a reputable and trustworthy private collection*
