The knob is fully sculpted as a crouching lion. The lion raises its head with curled mane, ring-shaped ears and open mouth showing teeth. It boasts a robust figure with one paw resting on the ball. The form is full and vivid with smooth and powerful lines. The seal plinth is thick and square, and the seal face bears ancient seal characters carved in concise and primitive cutting. Seals with mythical beast knobs have long been treasured scholar’s objects. The beast symbolizes warding off evils and guarding authority. Well preserved, this is an outstanding Qing jade seal for the studio.
