302 pp. (8vo) 18.5x12 cm (7¼x5") original blindstamped brown cloth, gilt spine. First Edition.

It is rumored that Walt Whitman collaborated with Swinton on this book. While there appears to be enough cumulated evidence to support this conjecture, not everyone is in agreement. The exact extent of Whitman's involvement in this book is debated but he may have authored the important final two chapters on the developmental theory of English ("Through speech man realizes and incarnates himself...") and on language in America. Scarce.

Condition

Wear and soiling to binding with rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, sunning to spine and edges, cloth lacking at very head and heel of spine, volume leaning a bit; hinges starting, offsetting to endpapers, toning to interior; good or better.
