Details: This lot consists of an antique inkwell made from a horse hoof and shoe and fitted with a realistic engraved metal top that imitates natural hair. There are also two brackets fitted to the top that might have held writing instruments.
This unusual taxidermy piece bears a plaque on the front of the hoof that reads "MARIUS DEBRY BRIGADIER 5e CUIRASSIERS REIMS VOUZIERS". The 5th Cuirrasier Brigade or regiment was garrisoned at Reims in France during 1891 (Wikipedia).
This lot is from the estate of a well-known and well-respected lifetime Civil War collector in Upstate New York. Worth Auctions will feature scores of antique firearms, edged weapons, paintings, and unusual items over the next few months. A selection of post-1898 firearms by major manufacturers will also be featured.
National Book Auctions will also sell the thousands of rare and collectible volumes which cover nearly every notable personage and event of the Civil War including regimental histories.
