9th-11th century AD. A hand-forged iron axehead with triangular-section blade, narrow neck widening to a broad edge, socket with long square lateral flanges; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Sedov, B.B. Finno-Ugri i Balti v Epokhi Srednevekovija, Moscow, 1987, pl.XLIII, item 13. 1.56 kg total, 14.3cm (5 3/4"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent.
