Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Candlesticks

hallmarked London, 1883-1884, by John Aldwinkle and James Slater (active March 1880-August 1884), in the neoclassical taste, each with a tapering square columnar standard decorated with patera, bellflowers and annulated banding, above a conforming cavetto-domed foot decorated en suite and terminating in an urn-form nozzle gadrooned on the lower half and decorated en suite, with a detachable circular annulated bobeche.
h. 11", w. 4-1/4"; weighted

Overall condition: Good. One candlestick has a few small dents around the base, with some creasing at one corner with a shallow, unopen 3/8" seam split just above it on the cavetto corner. Otherwise no problems and only minor wear consistent with age. Bobeches good. No monograms, nor evidence of their removal. Marks (on the basal edge of each as well as the inner bobeche sleeve of each): 1) the leopard's head, uncrowned (the London City mark); 2) the lion passant (the sterling silver mark); 3) the head of Victoria, in profile (the duty mark); 4) the letter "H" (the date letter for 1883-1884); 5) "JA/JS", in a quatrefoil (the maker's mark of Aldwinkle and Slater); and 6) "925/HY" incuse, probably an importer's or retailer's mark.
