CATESBY, Mark (1683-1749). Finch Creeper (Parula Warbler). [Pl. 64, Vol. I]. London: Printed for Benjamin White, 1771. [Third edition]. Hand-colored copper engraving, on fine laid paper. Sheet size: 21 x 13 1/2 in. Pictured in this stunning print among a branch of the Carolina Silverbell, the parula warbler is one of the smallest of all wood warblers. It is a migratory bird that breeds in the eastern United States and southeastern Canada and travels southward during the winter. During the spring, it can commonly be found in South Carolina, where it breeds and nests among the Spanish moss in the swampy woodlands.
