Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A petite cast-bronze cross made for personal wear. The cross depicts Jesus Christ on the crucifix, arms outstretched and legs together, with a faded visage topped with a miniature cross. Two crescent moons flank either side of the small upper crucifix, and an integral tripartite suspension loop projects from the top of the piece. Beautiful emerald-green patina envelops the entire pendant. Size: 1" W x 1.9" H (2.5 cm x 4.8 cm).
