Markus Oehlen, brother of artist Albert Oehlen, was a former leader of GermanyÂ’s Neue Wilde movement, an anti-establishment group initially formed in the 1980s in opposition to avant-garde, Minimalist, and Conceptual art. The group favored expressive painting with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes. Oehlen takes samples from punk and pop culture in his paintings, appropriating found imagery and employing a range of different techniques including silkscreen, photocopying, and printing. His images occupy a space between figuration and abstraction: forms shift in and out of focus in multilayered compositions, and pixel-like elements reference digital imagery.
