Attr. Arthur Johnston, Rare Maryland Pillar & Scroll Clock. Large painted iron dial inscribed "A. Johnston, Hagerstown" has black Roman hour numerals, 15 minute numbers, colorful floral corner spandrels and heavy pierced decorated period quality hands; pierced brass 8 day weight driven Salem Bridge style movement has a solid brass escape wheel, rack and snail hour strike on an iron bell, original 8 day lead side weights, turned wooden pulleys and brass covered pendulum bob. In a mahogany Maryland style pillar & scroll case with broken arch crest, original turned solid brass finials, maple turned side columns and maple inlays; the front door has a large flame mahogany front door panel with original glass aperture exposing the pendulum bob, original upper glass and stands on turned ball feet. Case in excellent refinished condition, no damage or repair to crest, original glasses in good condition, period dial has an old repainted surface, the black has been recently repainted including signature; movement runs and strikes, has winding key. 35 in. high x 17 in. wide x 4.5 in. deep. Weight: 37.75 lbs.
