Cabinet card portrait of a man purported to be the father of notorious American Indian leader Captain Jack. Verso studio imprint of Mapes, Baxter Springs, KS. The man stands before a wooded studio backdrop and wears a feathered hat and shirt, along with boldly patterned floral pants. His hand rests on a studio prop draped with a printed cloth. Two inscriptions on verso with possible identification information: "Medicine man / Hollow Tooth" inked in blue pen, with "Father of Capt. Jack 105 years old / Madock [sic] Indian" written lightly in pencil. Likely taken after the Modoc people were removed from California and taken to Indian Territory.
