A STAINLESS STEEL ROLEX REF. 1655 "STEVE MCQUEEN" OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE WRISTWATCH, CIRCA 1972, 39mm case (42mm including crown) serial number "3505643" with 24 hour fixed bezel, screw-down caseback marked inside with model reference number "1655", caliber 1570 26 jewel movement numbered "D233601", black dial marked at bottom "T SWISS T" with luminous white markers and hands with orange arrow 24 hour indication hand, stainless steel Oyster bracelet numbered "78360," and acrylic crystal. No box or papers. Note: The rare and desirable "Steve McQueen" Explorer II Rolex, so nicknamed for being one of the personally worn wristwatches of the trendsetting actor, was produced from 1971 to 1985 with an extra orange hour hand and luminous markers as a tool for cave explorers. This early serial numbered 1972 example comes directly from the family of the original owner and is presented in its authentic uncleaned/unserviced condition so that its new owner may oversee any desired restoration. The acrylic crystal has heavy wear, but has served its duty to protect the unmarred matte black dial. The thick numbers and facets of the bezel are fully intact further attesting to the never polished condition of the timepiece. Inspection of the 1570 movement revealed more untouched originality as the case appeared to have never been previously opened. Provenance: By descent from original purchaser.
