Chester Arthur Autograph Letter Signed as President
Autograph letter signed on Executive Mansion Letterhead bi-fold stationery, 4" x 6.5". Dated "Tuesday 24th April", and signed by President Arthur as "Chester A. Arthur".
An uncommon letter by Chester Arthur as President. Letters from his Presidency are quite scarce many selling in the $2000-$4,000 range. This was written to Mrs. John P. Jones: "I accept your kind invitation to join you at the opera tomorrow evening, with much pleasure- and am always very faithfully yours, Chester A. Arthur".
Chester Arthur was a widower, after the death of President Garfield, Arthur had ordered a remodeling of the White House, ( including addition of an elaborate fifty-foot glass screen by Louis Comfort Tiffany). It was during this period that he took up residence at the home of Senator Mr. John P. Jones, and his wife (Mrs. John P. Jones), to whom this letter was addressed.
