Description
SERIAL 58833. BARRL 20". CALIBER 44-40. MADE IN 1891. This carbine was shipped soft, in the white, to Schoverling, Daly & Gales in New York so it was always intended to be engraved and not an after thought. They used the very same engravers as did the Colt factory. The shop of Cuno Helfricht did work for both at that time. This beautiful carbine was first engraved on frame, trigger guard, barrel, band and butt plate. The frame exhibits nearly full coverage fine scroll with engraved border around Colt pony and punch dot back ground. Two inches of barrel breech are engraved, almost the entire length of trigger guard, front barrel band and toe of butt plate. The gun was fully nickel plated with gold wash hammer. The gun was stocked in xxx walnut and finished with a hand oiled high polish with a finely checkered fore-end. Carbine sports ladder rear sight with folding glove front sight. The tang holes for sight are missing. All barrel legends are sharp as new. As to nickel, the barrel and tube retain about half the finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The frame is a dull gray metal. Stocks have some minor impressions but are still excellent with a lovely grain and finish. Action works perfectly. Bore is sharp and shiny. Rare gun and almost impossible to find such a highly decorated example. A
