EDINBURGH, U.K. – Best known for allegorical figure compositions and landscapes, British artist Ernest Procter (1886-1935) made relatively few major oil paintings of war subjects. However, a long-lost major work, The Long Range Bombardment of Dunkirk, comes to auction this month. CINCINNATI – The collection of Claude “Henry” Withers and the John Baldwin Trust led the way in Hindman’s $1,185,656 April 15 Native American Art auction. Copper items from the Withers collection received significant interest from bidders, packing Hindman’s Cincinnati saleroom and achieving top prices. Revered collector and author John Baldwin’s collection also shone, with lots such as a grizzly bear claw necklace selling for $37,500 against a presale estimate of $20,000-30,000. Textiles from the collection of Bruce and Claire Montgomerie also were among top performers.

NEW YORK — Christie’s is proud to announce that Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware, a painting of transcendent historical impact, will be a highlight of the 20th Century Evening Sale taking place live on May 12 at Rockefeller Center. It is estimated at $15 million-$20 million. The painting hung for decades in the White House and is one of two extant versions by Leutze; the other version is the centerpiece of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
