Hindman celebrates sales of more than $100M in 2022

CHICAGO – 2022 was a historic year for Hindman. The auction house reported more than $100 million in total sales, marking a record revenue for the second year in a row. The firm also grew significantly across the country to a total of 16 offices and presented major collections for sale. The majority of the 140 auctions in 2022 exceeded their estimates, with a 121% average sell-through rate by value and an 89% average sell-through rate by lot. More than 30 new records were set. Throughout the year, buyers from more than 70 countries competed for works.

CHICAGO – A Harry Winston diamond ring amazed bidders at Hindman’s September 13 Important Jewelry auction, selling for $362,500 against an estimate of $225,000-$325,000. This dazzling 7.40-carat, D color pear shape diamond ring was a clear winner. Brooches were also among the standout lots, particularly a group from the personal collection of award-winning jewelry designer Evelyn Clothier.

Harry Winston, the once and forever king of diamonds

NEW YORK — Born in 1896 in New York City, Harry Winston was destined to one day be crowned the “king of diamonds.” His father ran a small jewelry shop and the young Winston soon showed himself to be a quick study. When he was just 12 years old, he spied an emerald being sold as a piece of green glass on a tray of costume jewelry in a pawnshop. To avoid alerting the shop owner, he bought it along with another stone for the grand sum of 50 cents and resold it for $800 a few days later.
