Stephenson’s welcomes New Year with Jan. 1 auction of antiques, art and jewelry

SOUTHAMPTON, Penn. – Collectors of fine art, antiques and collectibles always look forward to January 1st because it brings with it a time-honored Philadelphia tradition: Stephenson’s New Year’s Day Auction. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

“We’re always excited to welcome both regular bidders and new friends to our New Year’s Day auction and feel privileged that they choose to spend their first day of the year with us,” said Cindy Stephenson.

The sale’s top lot is a striking watercolor on paper by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926). Originally a native of Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of Pittsburgh, Cassatt later rose to become a highly respected Impressionist at a time when the field was dominated by men. She remains one of the finest portrait artists America has ever produced. The watercolor in Stephenson’s New Year’s sale depicts a seated woman in a relaxed pose, wearing a wide-brimmed flowered hat. Her head is turned modestly to one side, away from the artist. The estimate has been set at $15,000-$25,000.

Next is a painting by Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), who began his career painting portraits of distinguished individuals as well as murals for the Library of Congress. It shows a deserted street with the prominent shadow of a building in the foreground, set against a blue sky decked with clouds. The loose brushwork and strong, contrasting colors of his work are characteristic of American Impressionist art. It is estimated at $5,000-$9,000.

Jewelry has always been one of Stephenson’s strong suits. A Pandora 14K gold charm bracelet densely packed with beautiful charms is the top category lot in the sale. Some charms are enameled, while others are adorned with semiprecious stones. The piece displays a distinctive ‘cabled’ (as opposed to linked) style and is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Several fine watches will cross the auction block, including an elegant and highly desirable ladies’ two-tone Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust wristwatch with a white dial. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

Mid-century modern furniture remains very strong in the marketplace, and one the most sought-after names in that category is Paul Evans (1931-1987). A solid sale highlight is a circa-1973 Paul Evans for Directional glass-topped coffee table with a Brutalist sculpted-bronze base. It is from a desirable series that was inspired by the Manhattan skyline. The base consists of wood blocks that were cold-sprayed with bronze resin, then further sculpted by hand. The eye-catching table will cross the auction block with a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.

Classic guitars aren’t just collector’s items to be displayed and admired; they’re also meant to be played. As any guitarist will testify, vintage guitars only grow better with age. No shortage of interest is expected in a Rickenbacker 360/12 FG cherry sunburst 12-string electric guitar with a three-piece maple neck and a skunk stripe. This model, with its iconic jangly sound, was made famous in the 1960s by the Beatles’ George Harrison. Every rocker wants a ‘Rick’ in their collection, and the one offered by Stephenson’s, together with its fitted case, will be up for grabs with an estimate of $1,800-$2,500.

PHILADELPHIA — Though it consists of only 98 lots in all, Freeman’s has assembled an amazing lineup of fine American and Pennsylvania Impressionist art for its auction on Sunday, December 3. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Leading all estimates is a classic mother-and-child portrait by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926). In Mrs. Harris Whittemore and Baby Helen, the infant places her hand on her mother’s face and looks out, while the mother gazes lovingly. These parent-child themes recur in Cassatt’s body of work and are highly favored by collectors. Painted in 1898, the work comes from a productive and successful period in Cassatt’s life, where she was receiving recognition and many requests for work. The painting is estimated at $300,000-$500,000.

Although executed in 1978, The Station by Henry Koerner (1915-1991) would not be exhibited until 1983 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. A colorful and reflective study of human nature in the mundane location of a commuter passenger train platform, the work remained in the artist’s possession for years until it was placed at ACA Gallery in New York, from where it was purchased by the consignor. At 61 by 50in, this is an impressive painting that carries an estimate of $250,000-$400,000.

New Hope art colony Impressionist Edward Willis Redfield (1869-1965) is also represented classically with Winter Holiday, a snow-filled winter scene of children sledding. The work is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

American Realist Bo Bartlett (b. 1955-) offers rare insight into Fear of Division, a 1989 painted recollection of the moment he and his brother saw their first jet aircraft contrail in 1963, soon after the Cuban Missile Crisis: “My brother told me that the jet stream was the bomb, and that’s the moment I tried to capture in the painting, he is yelling, ‘Hit the Dirt, It’s the End of the World!’ I am crying on the ground. He kept it up, and I kept on crying.” He went on to say, “At the time, I was having petite-mal seizures and I was completely confounded with the concept of division in second grade — addition, multiplication, and subtraction, I could grasp, but division was the beginning of my dysfunctional relationship with math.” One of two Bartlett paintings in the sale, Fear of Division is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

CHICAGO — An early work by Norman Rockwell leads the lineup of Hindman’s 86-lot American Art auction on Tuesday, October 17. One More Week of School and Then… was painted in 1919, when the artist was just 25 years old, but it made the June 14th cover of Country Gentleman magazine.

The paintings Rockwell did for Country Gentleman from 1917 to 1922 were centered around the adventures and misadventures of Cousin Reginald Claude Fitzhugh, a brown-nosing, know-it-all city boy, and his country cousins, Chuck Peterskin and the spirited Doolittle brothers. The characters were first introduced in August 1917, with Cousin Reginald (seen here carrying a bouquet for Teacher) usually the butt of his cousins’ practical jokes. The 21in square oil on canvas laid to board, which features in the catalog of the artist’s work, was consigned from the estate of former media executive Joe Sample (1921-2022), who lived in Billings, Montana. It is estimated at $300,000-$500,000.

The property of a private Midwesterner, a cast of The Puritan by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) has an estimate of $50,000-$70,000.

Saint-Gaudens, the preeminent sculptor of the Beaux Art style, was commissioned to create a statue for Stearns Square in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1886. It was paid for by Chester W. Chapin to pay homage to his ancestor, Deacon Samuel Chapin, a founding member of the city.

The original sculpture, unveiled on Thanksgiving Day 1887, found many admirers and in 1894 Saint-Gaudens elected to make a series of 2ft 6in reductions for private sale. The present work, marked with the Roman numbers MDCCCXCIX (1899), is one around 40 documented examples, although for each sculpture, Saint-Gaudens made minor alterations to the figure, including varying the angles of the hat and the walking stick, as well as changes to the applied patina.

There are nine works on paper by Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) from the private collection of New York dealer Miroslav Klabal (MK Fine Arts). All are pastel counterproofs made by applying a damp sheet of paper to the surface of a work in pastel before running it through a press to create a near-mirror image. Degas, Cassatt’s close friend and another champion of pastel, produced them too.

A substantial number of Cassatt’s counterproofs are believed to be the only remaining trace of the original pastel. Among the nine counterproofs offered here, only two are known pastels. All formed part of the exhibition Art in a Mirror: The Counterproofs of Mary Cassatt held at New York’s Adelson Galleries in 2004-2005.
