CHICAGO — Hindman‘s Thursday, August 24 Dining at Home auction offers a wide array of fine tableware – and plenty of Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica-pattern porcelain, in particular.

“Hold an item of Flora Danica porcelain and you hold a little piece of Danish history in your hand” is how the product is marketed today. The factory’s first botanical pattern service was originally intended as a diplomatic gift to Catherine the Great of Russia, but – as the empress passed away before the service was finished in 1802 – it was kept instead by the Danish royal family. It was first used to celebrate the birthday of Christian VII in 1803.

The majority of the pieces that come to auction these days were produced at the Royal Copenhagen factory in the postwar era but – still made largely by hand – they remain reassuringly expensive. Most are characterized by finely painted studies of the indigenous flora and fauna of Denmark, with the Latin titles inscribed on the obverse.

The 17 lots for sale at Hindman are from two named estates: the collections of Marguerite Hark and Barbara D. Greenwood, both of Chicago. In addition to a healthy crop of bowls and dinner plates offered in sets of 12, the auction offers some of the harder-to-find serving pieces.

These include: a cache pot decorated with specimens titled Bellis perennis and Orobus vennu, estimated at $600-$800; a 14in monteith for cooling wine glasses, estimated at $2,000-$3,000; and five elements of a hot chocolate service comprising a chocolate pot and two cans and saucers with an estimate of $1,500-$2,500. Most splendid of all is a 12in vegetable tureen with naturalistic rose branch handles that is decorated to the cover with specimens of Ranunculus Ficariand and Rhinanthus Minor and Trifolium Pratense to the base. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
