RENTON, Wash. – Modernism from Northwest collections at MBA Seattle Auctions on Friday, September 29 includes two works by the British abstract sculptor Anthony Caro (1924-2013). Both come from the estate of Anne Johnson, who was the co-owner of the Erica Williams and Anne Johnson Gallery that operated in Seattle from 1975-87. According to family records, they were purchased in New York, likely at the Andre Emmerich Gallery, in the 1970s.

Caro encountered modernism while working as an assistant to Henry Moore in the 1950s and abandoned figurative work altogether after meeting with American sculptor David Smith in the early 1960s. Both the pieces in the sale date from the 1970s. Pictured here is Story Book, a welded steel and stoneware sculpture standing 16in high and estimated at $15,000-$25,000. The larger scale Ready (Table Piece) in welded and painted steel measuring 2ft 9in high and 20in across is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

CHICAGO – Hindman’s auction of Asian Works of Art on Wednesday, September 27 includes handling jades and carved hardstones from a number of sources. This late Qing period moon flask in a pale celadon stone comes from the collection of Christopher and Genevieve McConnell and was acquired from the Gurie Gallery in Montreal during the 1960s. The gallery, a staple of Montreal’s trendy Sherbrooke street from the 1950s, was one of the first in Canada to first to focus on Chinese works of art.

The moon flask measures slightly more than 8in and is carved with a range of auspicious symbols including the Yin and Yang symbol and ruyi heads. It is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio – Nabeshima porcelain takes its name from the clan that controlled the Saga domain in the Edo period. The region included the kilns at Okawachi, near Arita, where an unusually high-quality porcelain was made in the 17th century, much of it for use by the family. Unlike many of the pieces made in Arita that were exported, the Nabeshima designs drew on Japanese rather than Chinese traditions (especially those of textile design) and are often marked by a free use of empty space.

This circa-1680 dish decorated in iron red, blue, yellow and green with hydrangea blooms on a comb pattern is part of the James and Christine Heusinger collection at Neue Auctions on Saturday, September 30. Bought from the London dealership Grace Tsumugi Fine Art, it has an estimate of $5,000-$8,000.

The Heusingers collected Japanese art for many years and in 2022 donated a comprehensive collection of works by the Kyoto studio of Seifu Yohei to the Cleveland Museum of Art. A total of 326 lots will be offered at Neue Auctions, including lacquerware, porcelain, bronze, silver, enamel, netsuke, inro, sculpture, paintings and works on paper.

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is known across the world as a mecca for architecture. On Sunday, September 24, Rivich Auction will offer a lot certain to command the attention of architecture mavens: a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) blueprint for S.R. Crown Hall, which hosts the college of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

Built in 1956, S.R. Crown Hall exemplifies the aims and concerns of the famed German-American architect. Lacking columns and blessed with 18ft-high ceilings, its main floor delivers on the promise of being an eminently adaptable open-plan space, fit for hosting classes, exhibits and lectures as well as invigorating meetings and conversations between students and professors. The building earned National Historic Landmark status in 2001.

According to the lot notes, the 30-by-42.25in blueprint comes from the estate of architects who worked with Mies van der Rohe on this and other projects in Chicago, such as the Time-Life Building and O’Hare International Airport. The working document, now rendered simply beautiful and historic, is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
