[Presidential] Pierce, Franklin Printed Document, signed
Washington, (D.C.), Sept(ember) 13, 1856. One sheet folded to make four pages, 10 x 8 1/4 in. (254 x 209 mm). Printed presidential order, boldy signed by Pierce, directing "the Secretary of State," William L. Marcy, "to affix the Seal of the United States to the pardon granted to William Willis;" docketed in pencil on verso; creasing from contemporary folds; scattered light wear to extremities.
Records from the National Archives indicate that William Willis was convicted of assault on two people and sentenced to three months in jail with a fine of $5.
Over the course of his four years in office, Pierce pardoned 142 people for crimes ranging from counterfeiting, maritime larceny, and even inciting revolts.
